Damascus Road
The old home town looks like a long lost friend
See him smiling through his tears
He's got hatchets to bury, fences to mend
And a family he ain't seen in years
He burnt a lot of bridges yea he severed some ties
The night he set out on his own
But that old highway took a turn to the right
Down Damascus Road
There's a guiding light
Shining at the feet
Of the ones who find
The straight and narrow street
There is peace of mind
There is restful sleep
And all that's left behind
Is what you'd never keep
Try to understand
There is so much more
There's a nail-scarred hand
Knocking at your door
Saying "Here I Am
The one you're looking for
Follow me and lighten up your load
Come down Damascus Road "
See her standing at the church front door
As her Sunday school class shuffles out
She's got eyes of compassion, a heart for the Lord
And a husband that she brags about
I remember when she worked in the night
In the darkness, in the cold
Until that street she walked turned to the right
Down Damascus Road
There's a guiding light
Shining at the feet
Of the ones who find
The straight and narrow street
There is peace of mind
There is restful sleep
And all that's left behind
Is what you'd never keep
Try to understand
There is so much more
There's a nail-scarred hand
Knocking at your door
Saying "Here I Am
The one you're looking for
Follow me and lighten up your load
Come down Damascus Road"
