All it took was worn out
tennis shoes
A tee shirt and blue jeans
A Midwest summer morning
And some country air to
breath
From a wide-eyed child's
perspective
From the heart came every
word
And my biggest fan would
wag his tail
To the melody he heard
Singin' back road songs
In those back woods times
I went following the music
That was playin' in my
mind
There was bad and good
I found right and wrong
There was love and there
were lessons
In those good old back
road songs
And I grew up slow
But I grew up sound
Like the trees that grew
around me
I could hold my ground
And as years rolled by
I watched rivers change
And the gravel turned to
highway
But the melodies remained
From those back road songs
In those back woods times
I went following the music
That was playin' in my
mind
There was bad and good
I found right and wrong
There was love and there
were lessons
In those good old back
road songs
Now the boy's a man
With a touch of gray
Doin' what I can
Workin day to day
And when times get rough
And it's hard to smile
I find comfort in the wisdom
That I leaned on as a child
In those back road songs
In those back woods times
I went following the music
That was playin' in my
mind
There was bad and good
I found right and wrong
There was love and there
were lessons
In those good old back
road songs
