THE REST OF MY LIFE

As I stood there at the back door
And I watched the sun go down
Today had been the first day
That she was not around

But, I’ll keep the porch light burning
And keep a phone right by the bed
And I’ll try to stay sober
And keep good thoughts in my head

But the words that I remember
From either pity or from spite
She said, "Tonight will be the first night
Of the rest of your life"

She said,  "Tonight will be the first night
Of the rest of your life"

She said, "Your day will start like others
You'll hurry to the job
Your work was always number one
And you love that corporate mob"

"And in the evening, you might stop somewhere
To have a drink or two
But when you pull into driveway
Is when the truth comes home to you"

"And that's when you'll remember
Ah, my words will shine so bright
Tonight will be the first night
Of the rest of your life"

She said, "Tonight will be the first night
Of the rest of your life"

Now a year or two has come and gone
And the phone's not by the bed
The porch light isn't burning
I've got some good thoughts in my head

I could have stopped for a drink or two
And watch the evening come alive
But, there’s someone waiting home for me
When I pull into the drive

And when she puts her arms around me
And her lips reach out for mine
I know tonight will be the first night
Of the rest of my life

You know tonight will be the first night
Of the rest of my life
